This conference was held by the Europeans to decide who got what part of Africa, however Africa was not invited which caused conflict. (held in Berlin Germany) They decided that Europeans could not colonize without setting up a government, not caring about the African government. The main goal was to let colonies( France, Germany, England , Italy, ) have free trade on the Congo and Niger rivers.Even twenty years after the Berlin Confrence, Europeans began to colonize with little or no regard to ethnic boundries, which caused conflicts among African countires.Conflicts would occur even much later, such as Hotel Rwanda.
What caused the Berlin Conference to occur?-> France, Germany, And England were fighting over who got what territories in Africa, so therefore they held a confrence to resolve their problems.
Treaty of Nanjing
This treaty was an unequal treaty because it gave British citizens all of their rights in China, with no regard to Chinese laws. Due to losing the Opium War China had to pay a huge indemnity (payment for loss in war). The British also had the right to extraterritoriality or the right to live under their own laws and be tried in their own courts, meaning that they were never punished for breaking Chinese laws.(Also tried in British courts) Later there were many unequal treaties forcing China to Westernize. The Chinese began to have education for men and women stressing math and science, and there began to be Christian missionaries in China, with no regard to the Chinese religions. (The Chinese were forced to have open trade with everyone and due to Britian living by their rules Opium was not outlawed. THe British felt as though they needed to keep selling opium to keeep getting their beloved Chinese Tea. )
